Leukocytes Immunophenotype and Phagocytosis Activity in Pregnant and Nonpregnant Dromedary She Camels

Abstract: Pregnancy is associated with different local and systemic changes in immune cell phenotype and function. Here, we used flow cytometry and membrane immunofluorescence for the comparison between pregnant (n=18) and non-pregnant she camels (n=21) in terms of immunophenotype of blood leukocytes and phagocytosis activity of neutrophils. Camel blood leukocytes were labeled with monoclonal antibodies to camel antigens and analyzed by flow cytometry. Pregnant she camels displayed higher leukocyte counts than non-pregn… Show more

“…Some authors reported a higher proportion of lymphocytes among leukocytes in males compared to female camels ( 70 , 72 ), while the eosinophil fraction was higher in females compared to males ( 70 ). The impact of pregnancy on the camel leukogram ( 60 ) and the detailed immunophenotype of leukocytes in pregnant she-camels will be discussed in a separate section below.…”

“…Flow cytometric analyses identified camel blood neutrophils as highly complex/granular cells (side scatter, SSC high ) expressing CD45 and CD172a ( 35 , 62 ). The higher green autofluorescence of eosinophils can be used to differentiate between camel eosinophils and neutrophils within the granulocyte population ( 35 , 60 ).…”

“…Recent studies in camel immunology have enabled the characterization of several subpopulations of camel leukocytes, including camel monocyte subsets, some subsets of camel lymphocytes, and camel neutrophilic granulocytes (12)(13)(14)(15)(16)(17)(18). Neutrophils and monocytes are circulating myeloid immune cells with key roles in innate immunity to bacterial infections.…”
