“…Although artefactual hypoglycaemia secondary to G-CSF related leucocytosis is well documented [1][2][3][4] no reports of true hypoglycaemia induced by G-CSF. Consumption of glucose can occur with profound leucocytosis which presents as an artefactual hypoglycaemia.…”

“…One limitation of this study is the absence of leukocyte counts from the sampled animals (except for the dogs), as extremely high leukocyte counts could have affected glucose concentrations after prolonged storage. The veterinary literature is lacking in this field, but in human blood samples with marked leukocytosis (eg, due to leukemia), artifactual hypoglycemia has resulted from accelerated serum glucose consumption . However, all animals in this study were clinically normal and samples with abnormally thick buffy coats were not identified, so it is unlikely that samples with extreme leukocytosis were present.…”

“…5 We recently evaluated the condition of a patient with proved polycythemia rubra vera who had had a leukocyte count in the 55,000 to 86,000/cu mm\p=m-\range and whose serum glucose levels were reported to be as low as 8 mg/dL without symptoms of hypoglycemia. The patient is being described herein, because, to our knowledge, factitious hypoglycemia has not been previously encountered in this entity.…”
