Leuzea repens, a new combination (Compositae: Cardueae: Centaureinae)

Abstract: The taxonomic concepts and nomenclatural issues surrounding a group of taxa, often placed into 'Rhaponticum Vaill.' sensu auct. mult., are discussed. Taxonomically, taxa belonging to Acroptilon, Leuzea, Stemmacantha and 'Rhaponticum Vaill.', are now considered congeneric. 'Rhaponticum Vaill.' is not considered a validly published generic name and taxa are now recognised under the generic name Leuzea, which has priority. The taxonomic position of Acroptilon repens (Compositae: Cardueae: Centaureinae), the only … Show more

“…Centaurea L. (Compositae: Cardueae: Centaureinae), is a large genus of some 500 species, perhaps better known as the knapweeds , relatively few of which have been illustrated in Curtis's Botanical Magazine from its earliest days (e.g. Curtis, 1788, 1790; Sims, 1810, 1825; Hooker, 1878; Hind & Hall, 2003; Hind & Walters, 2006; Hind, 2019a; etc.). Many more species are certainly of horticultural merit.…”

“…Plectocephalus D. Don – Hind, 1996; Leuzea DC. – Hind, 2019a). Dostál (1976) treated the genus conservatively, noting that ‘the problem of a practical and natural division of this vast genus still remains to be solved’.…”

“…Centaurea iberica was found only once in Lithuania, in the vicinity of Riešė (Vilnius district), in an abandoned gravel quarry, on a pile of grain waste (Apalia, 1969;Gudžinskas, 1997) Leuzea repens, widely known as Acroptilon repens, is native to south-eastern Europe, western and Central Asia and West Himalayas. The species is naturalised in many parts of Europe, North America and Australia, and in some places, it is considered invasive (Greuter, 2006;Hind, 2019). Leuzea repens was found once in Lithuania, in Vilnius, on the slope of a railway embankment (Gudžinskas, 1997).…”

“…Taxonomists made many attempts until the end of the 20th century to subdivide the broad genus Centaurea L. into smaller genera, but the attempts were controversial (Susanna et al, 1995;Garcia-Jacas et al, 2001). Therefore, the genus Centaurea and allied genera have been the subject of intense studies over the last few decades (Wagenitz & Hellwig, 2000;Su-Gudžinskas || Review of the subtribe Centaureinae in Lithuania sanna et al, 2006;Garcia-Jacas et al, 2006;Font et al, 2009;Ferrer-Gallego & Altinordu, 2016;Arnelas et al, 2018;Hind, 2019). As a result, the broadly circumscribed polyphyletic genus Centaurea is divided into several putatively monophyletic genera (Wagenitz & Hellwig, 2000;Greuter 2003Greuter , 2006CWG, 2021;POWO, 2022).…”
