Leveraging Strategic Foresight to Advance Worker Safety, Health, and Well-Being

Abstract: Attending to the ever-expanding list of factors impacting work, the workplace, and the workforce will require innovative methods and approaches for occupational safety and health (OSH) research and practice. This paper explores strategic foresight as a tool that can enhance OSH capacity to anticipate, and even shape, the future as it pertains to work. Equal parts science and art, strategic foresight includes the development and analysis of plausible alternative futures as inputs to strategic plans and actions.… Show more

“…Various authors have addressed the need for the OSH field to expand its focus to address issues that will arise and extend into the future [ 6 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 19 , 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 31 , 86 , 89 , 90 , 220 ]. Crossing many of these analyses are issues of transdisciplinarity and systems thinking [ 216 , 220 , 221 , 222 , 223 ]. The perspective on decent work must incorporate or expand systems thinking, strategic foresight, health equity, and transdisciplinary concepts in the OSH field [ 4 , 220 , 221 , 222 , 223 , 224 , 225 ].…”

“…Another approach is to incorporate this new thinking into existing courses through individual or group projects and exercises that address Total Worker Health issues and global worker well-being [ 77 ]. Key content areas that might be addressed in these training activities are shown in Table 3 [ 151 , 152 ].…”

“…Streit et al [36] demonstrate the need to employ innovative methods and approaches to monitor and prepare for the emergence of safety and health issues and trends. The authors review strategic foresight-a promising methodological tool that can enhance OSH capacity to anticipate, and perhaps even shape, the future of work-and present a working foresight framework tailored for OSH, with recommendations for research and practice.…”
