Licochalcone A exerts antitumor activity in bladder cancer cell lines and mice models

Abstract: Purpose: To investigate the effect of licochalcone A (LA) on the inhibition of cell proliferation and ERK1/2 phosphorylation in bladder carcinoma cell lines. Methods:Cell viability was investigated using 3- (4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl In the mouse model, licochalcone A treatment via intraperitoneal (ip) administration induced a significant decrease in the level of regulatory T cells (Tregs). Comparison of the mouse interferon-α (IFN-α)-treated and LA-treated groups revealed that LA treatment caused enhancement… Show more

“…In C3H/HeN mice carrying UM-UC-3 cells, LA (40 mg/kg) enhanced the activity of cytotoxic T lymphocytes and increased the number of CD4 + CD25 + Foxp3+ regulatory T cells. This suggests that LA can be used to treat bladder cancer by modulating the immune response ( Zhang et al, 2016 ).…”

“…For instance, the administration of LA (40 mg/kg) to C3H/HeN mice bearing UM-UC-3 cells enhanced the activity of cytotoxic T lymphocytes and counts of CD4 + CD25 + Foxp3 + T regulatory T cells. Thus, LA might treat bladder cancer by modulating the tumor immune microenvironment ( Zhang et al, 2016 ). Administration of 10 mg/kg of LA attenuated the development of AngII-induced abdominal aortic aneurysm in mice through inhibiting expression of miR-181b, upregulating SIRT1/HO-1 signaling, and suppressing elastin degradation, matrix metalloproteinase and pro-inflammatory cytokines ( Hou et al, 2019 ).…”

“…Pharmacological Activities of Chalcones: The biological effects of chalcones were found to be dependent on the presence, the number and position of functional groups such as methoxy, glycosides, hydroxyl, halogens in both A and B rings 75 . They present a broad spectrum of biological activities such as antifungal 76 , antifilarial, larvicidal, anticonvulsant 66 , anticancer 77,78 , antiinflammatory 79 , neuroprotective 79 , antimalarial 80 , antibacterial 81 , antilipidemic 82 , antihyperglycemic 82 , antiviral 83 , antimycobacterial 84 , antiprotozoal (antileishmanial and antitrypanosoma) 85 , antiangiogenic 86 , antiplatelet 87 , anti-HIV 88 and Two chalconoids from the desert plant Pulicaria incisa prevented cell death by inhibiting reactive oxygen species (ROS) 89 . The chalcones showed selective, reversible and potent MAO-B inhibition compared to MAO-A.…”
