LiDAR Remote Sensing for Vertical Distribution of Seawater Optical Properties and Chlorophyll-a From the East China Sea to the South China Sea

Peng Chen,
Cedric Jamet,
Dong Liu

Abstract: The traditional way to detect the vertical structure of seawater optical properties and chlorophyll-a is mainly through shipboard discrete observations or Biogeochemical-Argo profiling floats, which requires considerable time to cover a limited area. In this study, the vertical distribution of seawater optical properties and chlorophyll-a concentration across two different opticallycontrasted sea areas from the East China Sea (ESC) to the South China Sea (SCS) were obtained for the first time using a shipboard… Show more

“…Another typical utilization of penetrating remote sensing is oceanographic profiling exploration. By utilizing sensors for oceanographic profiling, 5 the existing capabilities of marine remote sensing can be extended from two dimensions to three dimensions, with applications encompassing biogeochemistry, ecology, ocean dynamics, and target detection. Three complex issues need be considered during the process.…”

“…Zavalas et al [26] applied an automatic classification technique of LiDAR data to the habitat classification of benthic macroalgae communities, and the result of the study proved its effectiveness. Chen et al [27,28] introduced a novel hybrid inversion method that combined Klett LiDAR per perturbation of β π using airborne LiDAR over the South China Sea. The inversion results of this method are in good agreement with the in situ chlorophyll-a measurements.…”
