Life cycle assessment tool for estimating net CO2 exchange of forest production

Abstract: The study describes an integrated impact assessment tool for the net carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) exchange in forest production. The components of the net carbon exchange include the uptake of carbon into biomass, the decomposition of litter and humus, emissions from forest management operations and carbon released from the combustion of biomass and degradation of wood-based products. The tool enables the allocation of the total carbon emissions to the timber and energy biomass and to the energy produced on the basi… Show more

“…The data for the forest carbon exchanges used in our calculations was obtained from the forest growth model in Kilpeläinen et al [21]. The data used corresponds to the forest in northern Finland as its growth conditions are more similar to the region where the wood products in the building are produced.…”

“…It is assumed that Finnish and Swedish forestry management practices are similar. The harvesting period in the simulation is 80 years, and the annual carbon sequestration in ground and above ground per hectare of forest harvested was extracted from figure 3 in Kilpeläinen et al [21], for traditional timber production. On the other hand, the total forest biomass required to manufacture the materials in the building was calculated using LCI inventory data from Ecoinvent version 2.2, including energy and material input.…”

“…This was done using the Emission Calculation Tool developed by Kilpeläinen et al (2011). The calculations were done on an annual basis (g CO 2 m 3 a -1 ) as indicated by Equation (1), where (C net ) is a sum of the carbon uptake in growth (C seq ) and the carbon emissions from management and harvest (C man ), decomposition of soil organic matter (C decomp ) and from the burning of energy biomass (C harv ).…”
