Life‐history traits of Guntea loach, Lepidocephalichthys guntea (Hamilton, 1822) in the Payra River, southern Bangladesh

Abstract: The life-history traits of a fish species from a specific waterbody reflect the condition of the fish, the ecosystem and suitability of the waterbody for their survival (Khatun et al., 2019). The traits include the number, size and sex ratio of offspring, the timing of reproduction, age and dimension at maturity, as well as growth pattern and longevity since all the traits are interconnected. For the conservation and management of wild fishes, studies on life-history traits are basically carried out (Hossain, … Show more

“…Throughout the study period, it was not possible to select individuals of A. coila smaller than 5.6 cm TL. This limitation was most likely triggered by a lack of small fish in the fishing areas (Hossain et al, 2012b(Hossain et al, , 2012c(Hossain et al, , 2017a(Hossain et al, , 2017b(Hossain et al, , 2018Khatun et al, 2019;Saha et al, 2021c), by the tendency of fishermen to reject smaller fish (Hossain et al, 2012a;Saha et al, 2021a;Rahman et al, 2018;Nadia et al, 2023) or by the impossibility to reach the exact area where smaller size fish are located (Hossain et al, 2012a;Azad et al, 2018;Khatun et al, 2018). In addition, the maximum total length of A. coila measured in the Tetulia River in southern Bangladesh was 15.2 cm, slightly lower than the highest documented estimate of 18.0 cm (Froese and Pauly, 2022).…”

“…The recorded length (total length) of the individuals of the assessed fish species was pooled together and used in constructing a percentage frequency histogram (e.g., Saha et al, 2021). In all, 606 individuals of C. senegalensis were examined for the present study.…”

“…A fish species' biometric indices from a particular body of water provide information about the health of fish, the ecology, and whether or not the water body is suitable for their survival [ [16] , [17] , [18] ]. The characteristics include growth pattern, the volume of offspring, size and gender balance of offspring, seasonal fluctuation in breeding, age and dimension of mature fish groups, growth pattern, and natural mortality, all of which are interrelated [ 19 ].…”
