We summarize the economic importance, biology, and management of soft scales, focusing on pests of agricultural, horticultural, and silvicultural crops in outdoor production systems and urban landscapes. We also provide summaries on voltinism, crawler emergence timing, and predictive models for crawler emergence to assist in developing soft scale management programs. Phloem-feeding soft scale pests cause direct (e.g., injuries to plant tissues and removal of nutrients) and indirect damage (e.g., reduction in photosynthesis and aesthetic value by honeydew and sooty mold). Variations in life cycle, reproduction, fecundity, and behavior exist among congenerics due to host, environmental, climatic, and geographical variations. Sampling of soft scale pests involves sighting the insects or their damage, and assessing their abundance. Crawlers of most univoltine species emerge in the spring and the summer. Degree-day models and plant phenological indicators help determine the initiation of sampling and treatment against crawlers (the life stage most vulnerable to contact insecticides). The efficacy of cultural management tactics, such as fertilization, pruning, and irrigation, in reducing soft scale abundance is poorly documented. A large number of parasitoids and predators attack soft scale populations in the field; therefore, natural enemy conservation by using selective insecticides is important. Systemic insecticides provide greater flexibility in application method and timing, and have longer residual longevity than contact insecticides. Application timing of contact insecticides that coincides with crawler emergence is most effective in reducing soft scale abundance.

In Egypt, Saissetia spp. (Coccidae: Coccoidae: Hemiptera) are the most dangerous soft scale insects infesting fruit trees. The aim of this work is to study the ecological aspects of Saissetia spp. and its natural enemies in Egypt. The result indicated that Genus Saissetia Deplanche comprises here by two species These are the soft brown scale, Saissetia coffeae (Walker) and the Mediterranean black scale, Saissetia oleae (Olvier). Genus Saissetia recorded here associated with 14 parasitoid species and 16 predator species. The seasonal abundance of S. coffeae was studied for two successive years from 2009-2010 on olive trees in Northern Coast .The obtained results showed that, the insect population reached maximum during mid September (7728 and 8368/ 60 leaves/30 twigs) in first year and second year, respectively. Numbers by parasitoids Metaphycus lounsburyi (Howard), Microterys flavus (Howard) and Scutellista cyanea Motschulsky and a predator Scymnus syriacus Mars., reached maximum (31,9,3, and19 /60 leaves/30 twigs) during September, July, September and August, in the first year, respectively and 20,8,2 and 15 during September in the second year, respectively. The seasonal abundance of S. oleae was studied for two successive years from 2009-2010 on olive trees in El-Arish. The obtained results showed that, the insect population reached maximum during mid of August (9729/ 60 leaves/30 twigs) in first year and mid of September (6899/ 60 leaves/30 twigs) in the second year. Numbers by the parasitoids, Metaphycus helvolus (Compere), Microterys flavus (Howard) and the predators, Coccinella undecimpunctata L. and Exochomus flavipes Thunb., reached maximum (22,5,8 and 28 /60 leaves/30 twigs) during August, August ,September and August, in the first year, respectively and 24,19,4 and 22 during September in the second year, respectively.

Caracterización de daño y distribución espacial de Ceroplastes cirripediformis en maracuyá en el Caribe Colombiano

El maracuyá es la principal especie del género Passiflora. Sus principales productores son Brasil, Ecuador, Colombia y Perú con, aproximadamente, 805.000 t/año. En Colombia, se cultivaron 8.164 ha en 2019, con una producción de 137.622 t y un rendimiento promedio de 16.86 t/ha; no obstante, este agroecosistema es afectado por Ceroplastes cirripediformis, que causa daños severos y pérdidas económicas sustanciales. Para conocer su potencial de daño e importancia, se investigó los diferentes grados de infestación y la distribución espacial de C. cirripediformis en el agroecosistema maracuyá. Para esto, se estableció una escala de daño y se elaboró una grilla espacial sobre el cultivo, seleccionando 36 puntos, en los cuales, se realizaron muestreos mensuales, durante seis meses. En cada punto, se evaluó el grado de severidad de la escama y las variables meteorológicas. Con esta información, se estimaron los índices de dispersión, varianza/media, índice de Morisita y exp. K de la binomial negativa. Asimismo, se realizó un análisis de correlación (r de Pearson), entre los factores abióticos y los índices evaluados. Los resultados indican que los grados de severidad de C. cirripediformis establecidos fueron: grado 1 (<40 individuos), grado 2 (41-80 individuos), grado 3 (>a 81 individuos). De acuerdo con el análisis de correlación, los factores de temperatura y de precipitación inciden notablemente sobre las poblaciones del cóccido y su distribución. Los índices de dispersión mostraron que las poblaciones en el cultivo de maracuyá se establecen en agregado, por lo que es esencial focalizar estrategias de manejo hacia puntos específicos.
