Lifestyle and gallstone disease: Scope for primary prevention

Abstract: Objective:To study the antecedent risk factors in the causation of gallstone disease in a hospital-based case control study.Materials and Methods:Cases (n = 150) from all age groups and both sexes with sonographically proven gallstones were recruited over a duration of 3 months from the surgical wards of a tertiary care teaching hospital. Modes of presentation were also noted among cases. Age- and sex-matched controls (n = 150) were chosen from among ward inmates admitted for other reasons. Univariate and mult… Show more

“…Sachdeva et al in their study comprising of 150 patients, also found that hypertension was the commonest associated comorbidity (19%), followed by diabetes mellitus (10%). [25] 26% patients in our study had history of prior abdominal surgery. These figures were similar to those found by Wongworawat et al [26] In their study comprising of 504 patients, 175 patients (34.7%) had undergone prior abdominal surgery.…”

“…In a hospital-based case-control study, it was found that significant predictor variables of gallstone disease were abdominal adiposity, inadequate physical activity, and high intake of saturated fats [4]. The authors suggest that the majority of the risk factors are amenable to primary prevention, and screening and surveillance of these risk factors can be incorporated into the primary healthcare system.…”
