Light drag in a ring laser: An improved determination of the drag coefficient

Abstract: The light drag in a rotating fused-silica disk inserted in a He-Ne ring laser was measured at X = 633 nm and found to be a, = 0.5424 with an rms error (lcr) of +2X10 4, including the known error sources. This constitutes a tenfold improvement in accuracy over a previous result. %'hile the given error margin does not include the value given by the Lorentz drag in a linear arrangement, aLp = 0.54182 the measured difference of 2cr is deemed too small to claim a discrepancy.

“…Incidentally, the effect of the Earth's rotation on small to medium ring-laser systems has been routine in the aviation gyro industry for 15 years, although largely undocumented (as unremarkable); it has been noted as a bias in a variety of ring-laser or ring-interferometer set-ups (Aronowitz 1971, Bilger and Stowell 1977, Spielman et al 1990, Bretenaker et al 1993a.…”

“…In 1977 H. Bilger and W. Stawell conducted the experiment, wherein light propagated in the rotating optical disc of the annular laser interferometer. [8] Anisotropy of the electromagnetic radiation velocity space under transversal light entrainment in the rotating optical disc was investigated by V.O. Gladyshev, P.S.…”
