Tight gas plays an important role in the unconventional natural gas, and the researches of origin and migration of tight gas is of great importance to find the "sweet spots" for exploration and development. Combining the carbon isotopic analysis with light hydrocarbon analysis, it is concluded that the Upper Paleozoic tight gases in the Sulige gas field, Ordos basin are typical coal-derived gas with δ 13C 2 values ranging from -25.3‰ to -22.1‰ (average value = -23.7‰). In addition, methycyclohexane enrichment and a small amount of benzene and toluene are observed in light hydrocarbon composition. The C 7 light hydrocarbons are predominated by methylcyclohexane accounting for 44% to 68% while the content of the naphthene and isoparaffin is relatively higher in C 5-7 compounds. According to the Mango parameters K 1 and K 2 , the Upper Paleozoic tight gases in the Sulige gas field are derived from the CarboniferousPermian coal measures. Besides, the light hydrocarbon parameters such as the content of aromatics, benzene/n-hexane, toluene/n-heptane and other light hydrocarbon indicators show little differentiation which is inferred that the Upper Paleozoic tight gases of the Sulige gas field accumulated near the source rocks without long distance migration. Hence, it is reasonable to regard the district nearby the coal measures as the "sweet spots" in the Sulige gas field.

Seventeen Ordovician oil samples from Halahatang Depression are investigated for their thermal maturation. On the basis of GC analysis of the alkane fraction as well as GC-MS analysis of the demethylated hopanes, it is assumed that the oils are mixtures of severely biodegraded and nonbiodegraded oils. Therefore, their maturation is assessed on the basis of the distribution and abundance of compounds strongly resistant to biodegradation. The P 1 together with the P 2 values of C 7 light hydrocarbons suggest that the late filled nonbiodegraded oils for Halahatang are super mature. Triterpane and sterane isomerization maturation parameters indicate they barely reached the peak oil generation stage, consistent with the results obtained from the equivalent vitrinite reflectance Rc 1 (0.80-0.95%), while the Rc 2 (1.28-1.60%) delineate a high maturity of Halahatang oils. However these conventional triterpane and sterane isomerization maturation parameters gave only general information and a comparatively narrow range of maturity. Correlation between the maturation parameters of Pr/nC 17 and Ph/nC 18 , Ts/(Ts + Tm) and C 29 Ts/(C 29 Ts + C 29 H), MPI 1 and MPI 3 , 4-/1-MDBT and 4, 6-/1,4-DMDBT are rather good, confirming the validity to assess and differentiate the maturity of the severely biodegraded oils examined, with the exception of naphthalene maturation parameters(DNR 1 and TNR 2 ). According to the maturation classification assembled with selected effective maturity parameters, such as the MPI 3 together with the corresponding [P], the thermal maturities of Halahatang oils are moderate, while Ts/(Ts + Tm) together with 4-/1-MDBT demonstrate a moderate-high maturity.

A series of core samples taken during Cruise 79 of Glomar Challenger, drilling offshore Morocco (Mazagan Plateau), is analyzed for their low-molecular-weight hydrocarbon contents. Fifty-four samples from DSDP Holes 544A, 545, 547A, and 547B, deep frozen on board immediately after recovery, are studied by a hydrogen-stripping/thermovaporization technique combined with capillary gas chromatography. Thirty-eight compounds in the C 2 -C 8 molecular range, including saturated, olefinic, and aromatic hydrocarbons, are identified.Because of large differences in organic carbon contents, the total C 2 -C 8 hydrocarbon concentrations vary from about 20 to 1500 ng/g dry sediment weight in the whole sample series. Organic-carbon normalized values are about 3.2 × 10 4 ng/g C org for Lithologic Subunits IIIA and IIIB at Site 545 (Cenomanian to Aptian) and 1.0 × 10 5 ng/g C org for Unit V at Site 547 (Cenomanian to Albian) reflecting the slightly more advanced maturity stage at the latter site. Values exceeding 10 5 ng/g C org (Site 545) and 2 × 10 5 ng/g C org (Site 547) are associated with samples that are very lean in organic carbon and are generally rich in carbonate. These samples are enriched by small amounts of gaseous hydrocarbons.A detailed study of individual hydrocarbon concentrations, plotted against depth, reveal additional indications for migration phenomena. At Site 547, for instance, the most mobile hydrocarbons studied (e.g., ethane) appear to migrate by diffusion or a related process from more than 700 m depth toward the surface.
