Lightning origination and thunderstorm ground enhancements terminated by the lightning flash

Abstract: Proceeding from the measurements of the lightning occurrences, slow and fast electricfield disturbances, particle flux enhancements and their abrupt terminations, we formulate a lightning origination model. Registration of the extensive air shower simultaneously with lightning detection allows us to propose a solution to the long-standing problem of its role in the lightning initiation. Our analysis is based on the numerous Thunderstorm Ground Enhancements detected in 2012-2014 at Mt. Aragats in Armenia.

“…The termination of gamma ray glow events observed with AEF and radio observations has been already reported via single‐station measurements (Chilingarian et al, , ). However, in the present paper, we report the first simultaneous observation of these phenomena via gamma ray, AEF, and multiple‐station LF measurements, which enable us to determine temporal and spatial evolution of discharges.…”

“…There are reports of gamma ray glows and TGEs abruptly terminated by lightning discharges (Alexeenko et al, 2002;Chilingarian et al, 2015Chilingarian et al, , 2017Eack et al, 1996;Kelley et al, 2015;McCarthy & Parks, 1985;Tsuchiya et al, 2013). In the past studies, temporal relation between such a glow and lightning (Tsuchiya et al, 2013) and types of lightning to terminate glows (Chilingarian et al, 2017) have been discussed.…”

“…Since cloud bases are lower during winter thunderstorms in coastal areas of Japan Sea than summer (Goto & Narita, 1992;Kitagawa & Michimoto, 1994), gamma-ray glows become detectable even by sea level experiments (Kuroda et al, 2016;Torii et al, 2002Torii et al, , 2011Tsuchiya et al, 2007Tsuchiya et al, , 2011Tsuchiya et al, , 2013Wada et al, 2018). They sometimes terminate with lightning discharges (Alexeenko et al, 2002;Chilingarian et al, 2015Chilingarian et al, , 2017Eack et al, 1996, Kelley et al, 2015Kochkin et al, 2017;McCarthy & Parks, 1985;Tsuchiya et al, 2013;Wada et al, 2018), and a part of them also coincided with downward TGFs (Smith et al, 2018;Wada et al, 2019a).…”

“…Glows, on the other hand, would originate from relativistic runaway electron avalanches (RREA) (Dwyer, 2003;Gurevich et al, 1992), with feedback of photons and positrons creating new avalanches (Babich et al, 2005;Dwyer, 2007Dwyer, , 2012; they evolve on the time scale of seconds to minutes and even hours, as sketched in Figure 1 as well. Whereas lightning leaders produce TGFs, lightning is observed to terminate gamma ray glows (Chilingarian et al, 2015;Kelley et al, 2015;McCarthy & Parks, 1985).…”
