“…The concept has gained further consideration in the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report on managing the risks of extreme events and disasters to advance climate change adaptation (SREX) (IPCC, ; IPCC, ). This growing debate includes many dimensions such as understanding and defining TA in the context of agriculture (Adger & Bernett, ; Howden et al, ; IAASTD, ; Kates et al, ), analyzing transformational change as adaptation pathways and understanding the process of transformation, (Fazey et al, ; Mapfumo et al, ; Pelling, O'Brien, & Matyas, ) and identifying and measuring determinants of transformational capacity (Dowd et al, ; Marshall et al, ; Warner, Kuzdas, Yglesias, & Childers, ). In the adaptation literature, many studies have focused on characterizing adaptation actions, understanding the current status of adaptation practices, approaches to adaptation planning and analyzing adaptation literature from a typological perspective to categorize adaptation research into different categories such as incremental or transformational (Basset & Fogelman, ; Biagini, Bierbaum, Stults, Dobardzic, & McNeeley, ; Bizikova, Parry, Dekens, & Echeverria, ; Ford et al, ; Ford, Ford, & Paterson, ; Ford, Pearce, & Ford, ; Lwasa, ).…”

“…Successful rent seeking by the National Chamber of Rice Producers and ANINSA, which today represents 11 of Costa Rica's 15 arroceras, initiated the gradual displacement of smallholder farmers from the rice market (Rodriguez and Arias, ). This trend has been most significant in the Tempisque River Basin (Warner et al., ), which produces a majority of the country's rice (CONARROZ, ). Arroceras in the region sell their domestically produced rice and imported rice at the same price, making a profit while out‐competing smallholder‐owned and operated cooperatives.…”

“…In spite of these uncertainties, many smallholder farmers continue to plant rice without securing a contract, and then have to search for arroceras that may purchase their harvests as demand dwindles (Vindas, ). This has led to increased competition among smallholder farmers to sell rice, and many have accrued considerable debt as they are unable to sell their harvests (Warner et al., ).…”

“…There are far fewer studies concerning climate change prediction on a regional scale [11][12][13][14][15]. Similarly, recommendations for agricultural adaptation to climate change usually cover the entire area of the country, as they are needed at local and even individual farm level [16][17][18][19][20]. The impact of climate change on the phenology of crops is still of interest to many researchers [6,[21][22][23].…”
