Limnological changes in Dom Helvécio Lake (South-East Brazil): natural and anthropogenic causes

Abstract: In order to verify changes in physical, chemical and biological features of Dom Helvécio Lake (South-East Brazil), this study compares previous and recent data obtained from limnological investigations over three decades. Plankton species composition and density together with environmental data from 1978, 1983, and during 1999 to 2006 showed changes driven by seasonal climatic forces or by anthropogenic causes. Changes in diversity are shown as a consequence of alternation of rainy and dry periods and introdu… Show more

“…Among the impacts within the park the illegal hunting and fishing, introduction of exotic species (mollusks, fishes and even a primate) and tourism on the shore grounds of Lake Dom Helvécio deserve special attention. Concerning the latter, some modifications in the species abundance and functioning were related to anthropic interferences (Maia- Barbosa et al 2010). Some examples of impacts in the vicinity of the Park, which have been cited by the authors, are the extensive Eucalyptus spp.…”

“…This lake is warm monomictic, with a short circulation period (from May to August) during the dry season. It is classified as oligomesotrophic (Maia‐Barbosa et al ) with a perimeter of 37.7 km, an area of 5.3 km 2 , a volume of 5.94 × 10 7 m 3 , and a maximum and mean depth of 39.3 and 11.2 m, respectively (Bezerra‐Neto and Pinto‐Coelho ). The second is a temperate lake—Lake Mendota (43°06′N, 89°25′W)—located in an urban area of Madison, Wisconsin, and has been monitored by the North Temperate Lakes Long‐Term Ecological Research (NTL‐LTER) program since 1995.…”
