Linear Accelerator Stereotactic Radiosurgery for Trigeminal Neuralgia

Abstract: Background: Stereotactic radiosurgery is accepted as an alternative for patients with refractory trigeminal neuralgia, but existing evidence is fundamentally based on the Gamma Knife, which is a specific device for intracranial neurosurgery, available in few facilities. Over the last decade it has been shown that the use of linear accelerators can achieve similar diagnostic accuracy and equivalent dose distribution. Objectives: To assess the effectiveness and safety of linear-accelerator stereotactic radiosurg… Show more

“…Percutaneous radiofrequency thermocoagulation (PRT) is a well-accepted alternative treatment for GPN who respond poorly to pharmacological treatment. In a series of 80 patients with GPN treated with PRT, 63% remained at “good” pain relief condition 3 years after the procedure 42 However, PRT was associated with several complications including dysphagia, dysesthesias, and diminished gag reflex 43 …”

“…The results concerning the efficacy and toxicity of GK-radiosurgery are well documented [ 10 13 ]. Over the past years, radiosurgery has also been developed both with LINear ACcelerators (LINAC) [ 14 19 ] and the CyberKnife [ 20 ].…”
