Linear and nonlinear optical properties of cobalt-doped zinc aluminum glass ceramics

Abstract: Optical properties of cobalt-doped zinc aluminosilicate transparent glass ceramics in the visible – near-infrared (IR) spectral range have been studied. It was shown that the absorption and luminescence properties of these glass ceramics are defined mainly by tetrahedrally coordinated Co2+ ions located in ZnAl2O4 gahnite nanocrystals formed in the glass ceramic matrix. The luminescence in the visible and near IR was assigned to the transitions from the T14(4P) to the A24 and T24 energy levels of tetrahedrally … Show more

“…Thus, increasing the CoO content in the charge of MAS sitalls from 0.1 to 0.3 mass% (by three times) produces an almost four-fold decrease of time τ from ≈450 to 120 nsec [43]. Time τ for Co 2+ :ZAS sitalls decreases by ~1.5 times (from 900 to 650 nsec) if the CoO concentration is doubled (from 0.5 to 1.0 mass%) [44]. It is possible that this explains the large difference in τ that is reported for Co 2+ :ZAS sitalls by various researchers (Table 3).…”

“…It has been established that during synthesis of aluminosilicate sitall, a microcrystalline spinel phase is formed in it where the Co 2+ ions are found in tetrahedral coordination. This provides it with the optical characteristics needed for laser applications [8][9][10]. In particular, in the 1.5 µm region, sitalls with Co 2+ ions have ground state absorption and excited state absorption (GSA and ESA) cross sec-…”
