Linear Lesion Cryoablation for the Treatment of Atrioventricular Nodal Re-entry Tachycardia in Pediatrics and Young Adults

Abstract: LLC is an effective means of treatment for AVNRT and is associated with significantly improved procedural success and freedom from recurrence compared to single lesion methods, while at the same time obtaining equivalent efficacy to RF.

“…These higher recurrence rates were thought largely secondary to the “learning curve”’ of physicians applying a new technology. Subsequent literature has shown improvement in mid‐term outcomes 14,17,19 . Now that cryoablation has been available for 7 years, physicians should have ample experience with the use, benefits, and limitations of this technology.…”

“…It has been reported that cryoablation of AVNRT is associated with a reduced acute procedural success and increased risk of early recurrences when compared with traditional radiofrequency ablation [9]. Thus, we used a linear lesion cryoablation strategy in order to improve the acute and long-term outcome [10]. In conclusion, we present one more case of absent RSCV and PLSCV draining into CS associated with the occurrence of AVNRT.…”

“…Despite this, the long term recurrence rate appears to be acceptable at 8%. Other recent studies suggest that improved outcomes with cryoablation of AVNRT, perhaps comparable to radiofrequency ablation, may be achieved with 8 mm tip catheters [13], [14], linear ablation in the inferior portion of Koch's triangle [15], freeze-thaw-freeze cycles [16], and eliminating slow pathway conduction completely i.e. no jump or echo beats [17].…”
