Linking Short- to Medium-Term Beach Dune Dynamics to Local Features under Wave and Wind Actions: A Northern Portuguese Case Study

Abstract: Many coasts suffer from prevailing erosion, with them being particularly vulnerable to predicted climate change impacts, threatening coastal ecosystems, their services, infrastructures and populations. Understanding coastal morpho-sedimentary dynamics is thus essential for coastal management. However, coastal vulnerability may differ locally, depending on exposure/protection and local geological and morpho-hydrodynamical features, suggesting that a local approach to erosion risk assessment is needed to identif… Show more

“…Cliff erosion in Costa da Caparica (Tagus River south bank) is one of the most urgent issues to be solved by the local government [51], as mentioned before. Therefore, a large chunk of the investment made by POSEUR in the dimension of risk prevention went to the coastal stability of littoral areas, one of the European priorities to increase the quality of beaches [52].…”

“…To counteract the hydrogeological vulnerability in coastal risk areas, a number of actions could be implemented, among which the vegetation restoration and the application of soil bioengineering techniques for coastal dune consolidation and ecological restoration (Bio et al 2022;Rauch et al 2022).…”
