Lip print enhancement: review

Abstract: Lip print (LP) evidence can be an essential tool for human forensics. LPs have conventionally been developed using substances such as lysochrome dyes, fluorescent dyes, indigo dye, aluminium powder, and silver metallic powder. However, techniques for LP enhancement from various substrates are currently inconsistent and lack standardisation in practice. This review summarises current knowledge on the physical and chemical techniques of LP enhancement, identifies limitations, and provides suggestions for future … Show more

“…Digital photographs with enhancement tend to exhibit higher positive agreement compared to the other methods for several lip print types. Similar observations were made by Abedi et al in 2022 [ 15 ]. The study suggests promise for the digital photographic method as an accurate and efficient approach for recording lip prints.…”

“…But, if on the one hand, it is easy to use, on the other hand, it may not offer the best visualization of the prints. In latent lip prints, for example, the use of alternate light sources, like blue or green light, may allow for better results [ 66 ]. Similarly, other techniques involving filters, polarized filters, contrast, and other imaging software techniques have also offered good print visualization [ 67 ].…”

“…As a result, if a suitable method cannot be developed, the lip print approach can be utilized as a substitute for other forensic investigative methods, and lip prints have the potential to be a supporting tool in identification. This statement from Karki 22 is backed up by Abedi et al 23 , who claim that lip prints aren't the same as fingerprints because there are still flaws, such as the lack of validation and quality in defining specific lip print procedures. Lip prints, on the other hand, can sometimes help provide answers and act as extra evidence in relation to the events being investigated.…”
