Lipopeptides in cosmetics

Abstract: Lipopeptides are biosurfactants extensively used in cosmetics. The consumption of cosmetics containing lipopeptides is increasing as a result of the exceptional surface properties and diverse biological activities of lipopeptides which facilitate a vast number of applications not only in the pharmaceutics industry which includes cosmetics but also in the food industry. Cosmetics containing lipopeptides are available in various dosage forms according to their beneficial surface properties, which include anti-wr… Show more

“…Several recent reviews summarise the high interest of biosurfactant for different application fields (Singh et al 2007): food (Nitschke and Costa 2007), petroleum recovery (Sen 2008), environmental (Cameotra and Makkar 2010;Mulligan 2009), biomedical (Rodrigues et al 2006) and cosmetics (Kanlayavattanakul and Lourith 2010). During its long history, surfactin has been first studied for its potential pharmaceutical applications (antibacterial, antitumoral and hypocholesterolemic activities).…”

“…This global industrialization, have motivated the scientific and technological communities to seek products with high aggregate value in the world market, such as biosurfactants which are considered as suitable molecules in the industrial processes during the 21st century [46]. Moreover, biosurfactant-containing marketable products and patents have been reported for application in the healthcare and cosmetic industries [47], [48], [49], [50]. According to Transparency Market Research™, the global biosurfactant market is estimated at USD 1735.5 million in 2011 and is expected to reach USD 2210.5 million in 2018.…”

“…Lipopeptides have been used in diverse cosmetic products, so far encompassing: cleansing products as detergents and emulsifying agents, anti-ageing products as anti-wrinkle agents, whitening cosmetics as whitening agents, and finally,d ue to their broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity they could also ensure product preservation [78 -83]. Many of the mentioned applications are presented as patents [84].…”
