Lipopeptides Produced by a Soil Bacillus Megaterium Strain

Abstract: A soil microorganism identified as Bacillum megaterium was found to produce several antibiotics substances after growth for 20 h at 37 degrees C in a mineral culture medium. Analysis both by electron spray ionization (ESI) and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry (MS) identified these substances as lipopeptides. Predominant peaks at m/z 1,041 and m/z 1,065 revealed ions which are compatible with surfactins and lichenysins, respectively. Two other ions m/z 1,0… Show more

“…The IR spectrum obtained from the ultrafiltered products showed close resemblance to previously reported lipopeptides spectrum previously, as in the case of fengycin from B. circulans DMS-2 [4,13] and lipopeptides from B. subtilis [15]. IR spectrum of also showed a close resemblance of surfactin, lichenysins, fengycins from B. magaterium [17].…”

“…Most of the Bacillus sp. has been reported to produce both groups of lipopeptides in same medium during its metabolic pathway [11,17]. The production of different groups of lipopeptides by the same microorganism has been established in previous reports [11,17,20].…”

“…However, biosurfactants have not yet been employed extensively in industry because their production is not optimized [1,30]. Among the reasons they have not yet been commercialized extensively is the high costs of feedstocks [10,21,25].…”

“…The mechanism of fengycin action was revealed as a two-state transition controlled by the lipopeptide concentration -one state being monomeric, not deeply anchored and nonperturbing lipopeptide and other burried, aggregated form responsible for membrane leakage and bioactivity (Deleu et al, 2008). A soil microorganism identified as Bacillus megaterium was found to produce several antibiotics (Pueyo et al, 2009). Analysis both by electron spray ionization (ESI) and matrixassisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry (MS) identified these substances as lipopeptides.…”
