Landslides, earthquakes, and other natural events can change the landscape and generate human and economic losses, affecting transportation and public service infrastructure. In every geotechnical project, the investigation phase plays a fundamental role in reducing the risk of occurrence and mitigating catastrophes. As a result, governments have created entities to study disasters and identify triggering factors that generate huge losses worldwide. This research aims to conduct a systematic review of the relationship between geotechnics and disasters through bibliometric techniques, scientific production evaluation, and case studies analysis to recognize key topics, methods, and thematic development of the research worldwide. The research methodology consisted of three steps: (1) Database analysis, selection, and combination, (2) bibliometric analysis, and (3) systematic review using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) method. The systematic review with bibliometric analysis collected data from 1973 to 2021, with 1299 academic publications indexed in the Scopus and WoS database. These results indicated a growing trend of annual publications on disasters and their relationship with geotechnical studies, highlighting current issues and technological innovation. The main research trends in disaster risk assessment were topics mainly linked to landslides, earthquakes, liquefaction, and inappropriate analysis models with applications of geophysical methods, laboratory tests, remote sensing, and numerical models.

Case studies and numerical simulations show that the long-term stability of tailings dams largely depends on the evolution of their water content. Therefore, desiccation is one of the critical processes influencing the tailing dam's safety. In this work, the air-drying of tailings, starting from a sludge condition, is studied using a fully instrumented column experiment, performed in an environmental chamber with temperature and relative humidity control. Based on the experimental observations, a conceptual model for the desiccation process is proposed. The model consists of the combination of two mechanisms driven by evaporation: shrinkage and capillary rise. The latter is only activated after a granular structure develops (shielding skeleton), capable of sustaining the suction-induced intergranular forces. This evidence explains the tendency of real deposits to develop an unsaturated, dry tailings crust enclosing a body of mud-consistency tailings. In addition, the role of dissolved salts in the desiccation process was observed. Solutes in pore water limit the evaporation rate throughout the test by increasing osmotic suction. Moreover, salt precipitation was observed to cause an interruption of the desiccation process on two occasions during the experiment: first, by the formation of a superficial precipitation crust and later by pore clogging within a shallow layer.

How to Prevent Flow Failures in Tailings Dams

Based on research carried out at 67 tailings dams in Spain: (1) tailings dams contain alternating sedimentary layers with contractive and dilative geomechanical behaviours; (2) tailings saturate quickly but drain more than 10 times slower due to the high-suction capacity of the porous sediments (2–300 MPa); and (3) over the long-term, a stationary flow regime is attained within a tailings basin. Four temporal and spatial conditions must all be present for a tailing dams flow failure to occur: (1) the tailings must experience contractive behaviour; (2) the tailings must be fully saturated; (3) the effective stress due to static or dynamic load must approach zero; and (4) the shear stress must exceed the tailings residual shear stress. Our results also indicate that the degree of saturation (Sr) is the most influential factor controlling dam stability. The pore-pressure coefficient controls geotechnical stability: when it exceeds 0.5 (Sr = 0.7), the safety factor decreases dramatically. Therefore, controlling the degree of tailings saturation is instrumental to preventing dam failures, and can be achieved using a double drainage system, one for the unconsolidated foundation materials and another for the overlying tailings.
