Liquid Chromatographic Method for the Determination of Benzo[a]pyrene in Filter Tar of Turkish Cigarettes

Abstract: An extraction method for benzo [a]pyrene determination in filter tar has been tried. Various Turkish cigarette filter tars were extracted using different solvents. The benzo[a]pyrene identification and quantification were carried out by means of high-pressure liquid chromatography. By the proposed method a recovery of 50% has been reached. Analysis of various Turkish cigarette filter tars showed that an average 78 ng/cigarette of benzo[a]pyrene is present.

“…The main reason for low recovery is generally attributed to the complex composition of the tar mixture. Although the used solvent (dichloromethane) was the best choice for such an extraction, the enhancement of the recovery could not have been achieved [12]. The n-hexane extract of cigarette filters consists of a complex mixture of components.…”

“…Five brands of cigarettes (Cg1, Cg2, Cg3, Cg4 and Cg5) were bought randomly from the market, with the specifications given in Table-1. The analytical procedure described previously to determine benzo(a)pyrene 4 in filter tar was also applied here. Five cigarettes of each type were smoked by means of a standard smoking machine.…”

“…Since the smokers inhale the smoke into their body, most of the research focus on smoke analysis 1 . However, the filter (butt) is continuously in touch with the smoker's lips and consequently they have the chance that some hazardous compounds present in filter tar 2,3 , for instance benzo(a)pyrene [4][5][6][7] may enter into the body. That means, filter residue analyses deserves equal attention as smoke analysis.…”

“…Reverse phase chromatography is preferred over normal phase in pharmaceutical analysis as most of the drugs can be retained by this phase. In addition water is used in reverse phase chromatography which is also an advantage [14]. The purpose of stability testing is to check the drug quality under the action of many environmental factors like temperature, acid, base and oxidative condition.…”
