“…To counteract the retardation of the cement hydration reaction, the setting accelerator lithium carbonate was added to the suspension 16,17 acting as heterogeneous nuclei and thus lowering the nucleation barrier to precipitate the hydrated calcium aluminate. As shown by the rheology measurements of the early setting phase in Figs.…”

“…The setting time is approximately the same for the three different accelerator concentrations and undetectable when not using any lithium see Fig 2 . Lithium salts have been used as accelerators for high alumina cements (HAC) for a long time. More recently Matusinovi et al have made a rather extensive study on how lithium salts affect the hydration of HAC's [5].The lithium immediately reacts and precipitates as a lithium hydrometaaluminate hydrate (LiH(AlO 2 ) 2 . These hydrates then function as heterogeneous precipitation sites for the calcium aluminate hydrates and helps to supress the kinetic nucleation barrier connected with the precipitation.…”

“…This lithium salt action suppresses the induction period of the cement hydration and accelerates the setting thus resulting in a high early strength. If the addition of lithium salts is too high, this results in lowered long-term strength [5].…”
