Knowledge of soil characteristics in areas where activities related to the environment are developed, such as Porto Alegre Botanical Garden (JB-PoA), is a fundamental condition for the sustainable use of this natural resource. The objective of this study was to characterize, classify and evaluate some issues about soil formation in Porto Alegre Botanical Garden, as well as relate their distribution on the landscape according to environmental characteristics. For the morphological description and collecting samples four profiles were selected (P1 to P4), located in the summit-shoulder transition, backslope, footslope and toeslope, respectively. Granulometric distribution of the P1 and P3 profiles indicated sharp textural gradient, with presence of textural and "plânico" B horizons, respectively, according to Brazilian System of Soil Classification. There is predominance of low values of pH, and low base saturation, with exception of P4, indicating probable deposition of solution material at this area. The Fed/Fes relationship was greater in the profile located in the summit-shoulder transition (P1), indicating higher weathering. The Feo/Fed relationship increased in P3 and P4 profiles, indicating greater participation of iron oxides of low crystallinity in reducing environment. The occurrence of some pedogenic processes may be inferred, like lessivage in P1 (Ultic Hapludalf), due to clay skins and higher values of fine clay:total clay relationship in subsurface; ferrolysis and gleization, by low pH value and high Feo/Fed relationship in E and EB horizons of P3 (Oxyaquic Hapludalf), being the last also present in P4 (Humaqueptic Endoaquent), indicating gleization occurrence.

SUMMARYThe Pantanal region can be characterized as a quaternary floodplain with predominant sedimentation in the form of alluvial fans. In the geomorphologic and sedimentary evolution, the avulsion process is inherent to this depositional system and its dynamics, together with surface water floods, influence soil sedimentation on this plain. The knowledge and differentiation of these two events can contribute to a better understanding of the variability of soil properties and distribution under the influence of these sedimentation processes. Therefore, this study investigated the genesis of soils in the Northern Pantanal with textural contrasts in deeper horizons and their relationship with the depositional system dynamics. We analyzed four soil profiles in the region of Barão de Melgaço, Mato Grosso State, Brazil (RPPN SESC Pantanal). Two profiles were sampled near the Rio Cuiabá (AP1 and AP4) and two near the Rio São Lourenço (AP10 and AP11). In AP11, the horizons contrast in particle size between the profile basis and the surface. In AP1, AP4 and AP10, the horizons overlaying the sand layer have similar particle size properties, mainly in terms of sand distribution. In the first case, floods (surface water) seem to have originated the horizons and layers with contrasting texture. In the second case, avulsion is the most pronounced process. Therefore, the two modes can form soils with contrasting texture that are discriminable by soil morphology, based on the distinct features associated to the specific sedimentation processes.Index terms: alluvial soils, hydromorphic soils, fluvial deposition system, alluvial fans, avulsion.(

reSumOOs Tabuleiros Costeiros são áreas com relevo aplainado cortadas por vales, que apresentam predominantemente Argissolos Amarelos e Latossolos Amarelos. Contrastando com essa paisagem, existem depressões circulares conhecidas por lagoas, que imprimem nova dinâmica na formação dos solos, em razão da presença intermitente de água ao longo do ano. Os solos dessas áreas ainda são pouco conhecidos, o que implica na possibilidade de uso e manejo inapropriado. Objetivou-se descrever morfologicamente, caracterizar física e quimicamente e classificar os solos existentes em duas dessas áreas de lagoas, visando obter informações para subsidiar um manejo mais adequado. Constatou-se a presença de solos classificados como Organossolo Háplico Sáprico sódico, Gleissolo Háplico Sódico vertissólico (dois perfis), Gleissolo Háplico Sódico típico, Gleissolo Sálico Sódico vertissólico, Planossolo Háplico Eutrófico solódico e Vertissolo Hidromórfico Sódico salino. Esses solos apresentaram cores acinzentadas, típicas do hidromorfismo intermitente observado nas áreas, textura predominantemente mais fina, chegando às classes texturais argilosa e muito argilosa, e estrutura predominantemente maciça, aspectos que prenunciam baixa aeração, o que, juntamente com a alta porcentagem de saturação por sódio, indicam grandes limitações físicas e químicas. Esses aspectos recomendam seu uso como áreas de preservação permanente.
