Live maternal speech and singing have beneficial effects on hospitalized preterm infants

Abstract: A renewed connection to the mother's voice can be an important and significant experience for preterm infants. Exposure to maternal speech and singing shows significant early beneficial effects on physiological state, such as oxygen saturation levels, number of critical events and prevalence of calm alert state. These findings have implications for NICU interventions, encouraging maternal interaction with their medically stable preterm infants.

“…Two studies used the live maternal voice as the exposure stimulus [26,40], one used the recorded maternal voice via a bone conduction device attached to the participant's wrist [41] and all other studies used the recorded maternal voice delivered by tape recorder [48], micro speaker [38,39,42,[45][46][47] or earphones [43,44]. Five studies filtered the maternal voice through a low-pass filter prior to the intervention and combined it with biological sounds and heartbeats to replicate the in utero environment [38,42,[45][46][47].…”

“…Besides music therapy intervention being with live singing, the MUSIP involved the mother's singing. Interventions that use maternal voice showed positive effects both on the infant and the mother, since the maternal voice is a privileged source of stimulation for the fetus and the newborn, and can promote mother-infant bonding and affective communication (Arnon et al, 2014;Butler et al, 2014;Cevasco, 2008;Filippa et al, 2013).…”

“…According to the recent review of literature conducted by Palazzi, Nunes, and Piccinini (2017), music therapy interventions carried out by music therapists can be found among the music-based interventions in the NICU (Ettenberger et al, 2014;Haslbeck, 2014;Loewy, Stewart, Dassler, Telsey, & Homel, 2013;Standley et al, 2010;Ullsten, Eriksson, Klässbo, & Volgsten, 2016), as well as musical stimulation interventions conducted by other healthcare professionals (Alipour, Eskandari, Ahmari Tehran, Eshagh Hossaini, & Sangi, 2013;Keidar, Mandel, Mimouni, & Lubetzky, 2014) or by parents (Arnon et al, 2014;Filippa, Devouche, Arioni, Imberty, & Gratier, 2013;Nöcker-Ribaupierre, Linderkamp, & Riegel, 2015). These interventions can employ a receptive approach with recorded sounds and music (Alipour et al, 2013;Standley et al, 2010), or an active approach through live music and singing (Ettenberger et al, 2014;Haslbeck, 2014;Loewy et al, 2013;Malloch et al, 2012;Ullsten et al, 2016).…”

“…7 É sabido que o feto e o recém-nascido reconhecem a voz materna, memorizam as suas caracteristicas e respondem ao estímulo auditivo desse som. 8 O processo de desenvolvimento e crescimento de um ser inicia-se ainda intraútero, quando mãe e feto estabelecem uma harmônica e rítmica melodia de vida, estando interligados entre si. 9 E quando a gestação é interrompida prematuramente, esse bebê terá necessidade de cuidados especiais.…”
