LLIN Ownership, Utilization, and Malaria Prevalence: An Outlook at the 2015 Nigeria Malaria Indicator Survey

Abstract: Background: Malaria is a disease caused by an infected female Anopheles mosquito. Nigeria, one of the two epicenters of malaria transmission across the globe, contributes to 40 percent global malaria burden. The disease, considered a global priority, has an annual global death toll of around 400,000 people. The global reduction in malaria burden which is the result of direct scale-up of one of the core malaria interventions using the insecticide-treated nets (ITNs), has prevented around 663 million cases of ma… Show more

“…One of the most effective methods of the malaria vector control in Cameroon is the use of mosquito bed nets and depending on whether it is a long-lasting insecticidal one, further increases the vector control chances. Several studies have highlighted the importance of increased mosquito net usage and LLITN and their role in reducing the incidence of malaria in SSA (38)(39)(40)(41)(42)(43)(44). In this study, most urban-city centers and rural clusters household settlements in the North region had at least one mosquito net whether or not it was a treated (> 50% ), while the West and East regions recorded a low coverage for the above ITNs coverage category.…”

“…The use of LLINs especially in malaria endemic countries is considered as one of the most cost-effective measures towards malaria prevention [30] [31]. This study showed that only one state had a significant quantity of LLINs distributed in 2017 ( Figure 4 and Table 2) and this was because the state had a replacement campaign in 2017.…”

“…Providing universal access to accurate malaria diagnostic testing for all patients suspected of having malaria is the ultimate goal of any national malaria control programme [36]. Hence following a major paradigm change of a progressive shift from presumptive treatment towards parasitological confirmation prior to treatment, particularly in areas of high malaria transmission required an increase in the procurement and use of rapid diagnostic tests [30]. For rational use of ACTs to be improved, WHO recommended in 2010 that all suspected cases of malaria should have parasitological confirmation before treatment; and central to implementing this policy change are RDTs which are intended to improve the management of suspected malaria cases; increasing the use of first-line antimalarials in patients with confirmed malaria; and encouraging the diagnosis and appropriate treatment of patients without malaria [37].…”

“…In Nigeria, statistics has that the prevalence of malaria has declined from 42% in 2010 to 27% in 2015, and in the northwestern zone of the country, the prevalence has dropped from 48 per cent to 37 per cent between 2010 and 2015 [1] [4]. Katsina state, where the outbreak occurred, has a prevalence of 27.8 per cent ranking seventeen out of the 36 states including Abuja in the country [1].…”
