Lobe-Specific Changes in Zinc Levels in the Prostate of Rats Exposed to Tributyltin Chloride

Abstract: The prostate is an accessory sex organ that secretes essential components of semen. High levels of Zn are found both in the prostate and its secretion. In the present study, the effects of environmental stress on zinc levels in the prostate were examined in Wistar male rats exposed to tributyltin chloride (TBTC), an environmental toxicant, by inductively coupled argon plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for determination of Zn concentration in lobe-dissectioned specimens and micro-PIXE analysis for determination… Show more

“…Microbeam-based elemental analyses, such as particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) and synchrotron radiation X-ray fluorescence (SR-XRF), are valuable for obtaining elemental profiles of small areas and the precise distributions of elements in tissues [6][7][8]. High-energy incident X-rays in SR-XRF are suitable for detecting small amounts of uranium in tissues because they excite uranium L-lines that do not interfere with major elements such as calcium and potassium, unlike uranium M-lines.…”

“…Ion PIXE provides multi-elemental capability, which allows the simultaneous comparison of distribution of several elements inside the same specimen [401][402][403][404][405][406][407][408][409][410].…”

“…Elemental proles of the ne structure of tissues and cells are also obtained by irradiation of a microbeam onto the aimed site (spot analysis). [270][271][272] During micro-PIXE analysis, scanning transmission ion microscopy (STIM) images are obtained simultaneously in addition to the elemental maps. Thus, it is easy to relate the elemental maps to the ne structure of tissues.…”
