Frequent location updates of individual Internet of Things (IoT) devices can cause several problems (e.g., signaling overhead in networks and energy depletion of IoT devices) in massive machine type communication (mMTC) systems. To alleviate these problems, we design a distributed group location update algorithm (DGLU) in which geographically proximate IoT devices determine whether to conduct the location update in a distributed manner. To maximize the accuracy of the locations of IoT devices while maintaining a sufficiently small energy outage probability, we formulate a constrained stochastic game model. We then introduce a best response dynamics-based algorithm to obtain a multi-policy constrained Nash equilibrium. From the evaluation results, it is demonstrated that DGLU can achieve an accuracy of location information that is comparable with that of the individual location update scheme, with a sufficiently small energy outage probability.

The millimeter-wave (mmWave) spectrum is one of the important propositions of 5G mobile networks due to its ability to accommodate massive traffic demands and an ever-increasing number of wireless devices. The beam-formed directional technique overcomes the propagation and path loss challenges of mmWave high frequencies. Though the directional convergence is expected to unleash new possibilities, it cannot be implemented with conventional power-saving solutions optimized over omnidirectional communications. Paging broadcast, for users in Idle Discontinuous Reception (IDRX) mode for energy saving, is one such necessary function in a wireless communication that needs modification in highly directional beam-based transmissions. Due to the limited spatial coverage of directional beams, the paging transmission takes place over multiple beams, which increases the paging resource overheads of the network substantially. In this article, we present a novel paging mechanism for the directional air interface in mmWave-enabled 5G communications. Numerical analysis of the proposed Partitioned UE ID-based Directional Paging (PIDP) mechanism reduces the paging resource overheads of the network, resulting in a 15% gain in power savings compared to directional paging transmission without the UE ID partition.

Enabling Precision Medicine via Contemporary and Future Communication Technologies: A Survey

Precision medicine (PM) is an innovative medical approach that considers differences in the individuals' omics, medical histories, lifestyles, and environmental information in treating diseases. To fully achieve the envisaged gains of PM, various contemporary and future technologies have to be employed, among which are nanotechnology, sensor network, big data, and artificial intelligence. These technologies and other applications require a communication network that will enable them to work in tandem for the benefit of PM. Hence, communication technology serves as the nervous system of PM, without which the entire system collapses. Therefore, it is essential to explore and determine the candidate communication technology requirements that can guarantee the envisioned gains of PM. To the best of our knowledge, no work exploring how communication technology directly impacts the development and deployment of PM solutions exists. This survey paper is designed to stimulate discussions on PM from the communication engineering perspective. We introduce the fundamentals of PM and the demands in terms of quality of service that each of the enabling technologies of PM places on the communication network. We explore the information in the literature to suggest the ideal metric values of the key performance indicators for the implementation of the different components of PM. The comparative analysis of the suitability of the contemporary and future communication technologies for PM implementation is discussed. Finally, some open research challenges for the candidate communication technologies that will enable the full implementation of PM solutions are highlighted.INDEX TERMS Precision medicine, fourth industrial revolution (4IR) technologies, communication technologies, 5G, 6G.
