Local evaluation of the Interaction between Soil Biosphere Atmosphere soil multilayer diffusion scheme using four pedotransfer functions

Abstract: The Surface Monitoring Of the Soil Reservoir Experiment (SMOSREX) site is used in this study to evaluate the performance of the Interaction between Soil Biosphere Atmosphere soil multilayer diffusion scheme (ISBA‐DF) in reproducing short‐term and long‐term evolution of soil moisture and temperature profiles, surface energy fluxes, and drainage rate using both the Brooks and Corey and the van Genuchten models describing soil‐water retention and conductivity curves. The site consists of a fallow field in southwe… Show more

“…We use the diffusive soil (DF) option meaning that the soil heat and mass transfers are solved on a multi-layer grid (Decharme et al, 2011). A recently developed multi-layer canopy radiative transfer scheme has been incorporated into MEB in order to determine the fraction of incoming radiation intercepted by the canopy layer, transmitted to the ground and reflected.…”

“…In this study, the multi-layer soil diffusion (DF; Decharme et al, 2011) option is used, along with the explicit multi-layer snow scheme. The prognostic soil temperature is represented by T g , for N g soil layers.…”

“…This latest version, called ISBA CC , is used in this study. To better simulate soil moisture content in the deep Amazonian soils, we use the multilayer soil diffusion scheme implemented in ISBA and described by Decharme et al (2011Decharme et al ( , 2013. In addition, the canopy radiative transfer scheme developed by Carrer et al (2013) is used.…”

“…The ISBA surface scheme (Noilhan and Planton, 1989;Noilhan and Mahfouf, 1996) simulates interactions between the soil, vegetation and the atmosphere with a sub-hourly time step (SVAT model). The multilayer version of ISBA (ISBA-DIF) uses a diffusive approach (Boone et al, 2000;Decharme et al, 2011): surface and soil water fluxes are propagated from the surface through the soil column. Transport equations for mass and energy are solved using a multilayer vertical discretization of the soil.…”
