Abstract:The coupling constant between two nearby waveguides is usually predicted using formulas derived from the perturbative theory applied to the electromagnetic Maxwell's equations. These formulas however fail to provide any reliable estimate when the index contrast between the core of the waveguide and its cladding becomes large. We demonstrate in this paper that a good accuracy can be retrieved if the Local Field Effect is taken into account. Moreover, we show that in case of structured and inhomogeneous cladding… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
