Local Hyperthermia at 44°C for the Treatment of Plantar Warts: A Randomized, Patient‐Blinded, Placebo‐Controlled Trial

Abstract: There have been anecdotal reports that local hyperthermia was effective in the treatment of viral warts. We conducted a randomized, patient-blinded, placebo-controlled trial to test the effect of local hyperthermia (44 degrees C for 30 min a day for 3 consecutive days plus 2 additional days 2 weeks later) on plantar warts. By the end of 3 months, 53.57% of patients (15/28) in the treatment group and 11.54% of patients (3/26) in the control group were cured (P < .01). The effect was not influenced by patient ag… Show more

“…Similar to our study, in some patients warts turned more keratotic, known as "bulging up," before clearance (Huo et al, 2010). The clearance rate during the 3 month follow up period was 53.57% in the thermotherapy group while only 11.54% of patients in the placebo group healed.…”

Destructive and caustic agents are more likely to produce scarring at these sites and should be used with care Salicylic acid cream/ointment 2-10% or cautious use of salicylic acid paint, 12-17%, used without occlusion Cryotherapy, milder freeze Topical retinoid 110,111 Others treatments: acupuncture, 171 cantharidin, 41 for the most part, weak.…”

“…Temperature-controlled systems using the combination of a hyperthermic apparatus and a noninvasive temperature monitor have been developed, and some of them have been used clinically [3,7,8,10,[14][15][16]. A noncontact type thermal monitoring system, other than thermography, has also been reported [3,10,14]; however, it only shows one value for the average temperature in a certain area.…”

“…A noncontact type thermal monitoring system, other than thermography, has also been reported [3,10,14]; however, it only shows one value for the average temperature in a certain area. In contrast, the present thermal sensor circuit is unique in its ability to acquire multipoint temperatures (thermal images) using thermograph.…”
