Local responses to conservation in the Richtersveld National Park, South Africa

Abstract: Local notions of conservation deserve closer scrutiny. We cannot assume that they naturally coincide with those of the tourist core; nor that they are automatically given higher priority when local populations are induced to participate in practices which conserve flora and fauna. A case study of the establishment of the Richtersveld National Park in Namaqualand, a remote arid region of South Africa, is used to argue that local attitudes to conservation and development (associated with tourism) can become incr… Show more

“…The positive attitudes towards national parks shown here reflect a change in the attitudes of communities around national parks in South Africa (Hough 1988; Newmark et al 1993;Fourie 1994;Boonzaier 1996;Weaver 2000;Munnik & Mhlope 2000;Berger & Ntiati 2000;Hove 2000; Jacobson 2000). It remains imperative, however, that conservation areas are seen to be promoting the conservation of nature and biodiversity (Cater & Lowman 1994).…”

“…Such information would help managers decide which comparisons matter most to local people, how survey techniques might need to change, which messaging is most reliable, how relationships influence MPA support, and what broader benefits are valued. Any optimism based largely on information from the external catalyst needs to be carefully managed to avoid later disappointment, cynicism and poor relationships if recovery does not happen quickly (Boonzaier, 1996).…”

“…Community conservation, which is also known as community-based natural resource management 1 (CBNRM), involves the decentralization of management authority and distribution of benefits to affected communities with the belief that this will generate incentives to support conservation planning. Community conservation has become a major strategy for conservation and development agencies operating in the developing world and produced numerous studies examining its opportunities and limitations (IIED 1994;Boonzaier 1996;Songorwa 1999;Twyman 2000;Hulme and Murphree 2001;Brown 2002;Wilshusen et al 2002Wilshusen et al , 2003Magome and Murombedzi 2003;Algotsson 2006;Blaikie 2006).…”
