Local tissue reaction after the application of topical hemostatic agents in a rat partial nephrectomy model

Abstract: Various hemostatics are used for renal surgical procedures. We investigated the hemostatic efficacy of cellulose derivatives on the model of partial nephrectomy in rats focusing on the local reaction of renal parenchyma. A total of 50 Wistar rats were divided into five groups of 10 animals each. Partial nephrectomy of the caudal pole without hilar vascular control was performed. Oxidized cellulose (OC), sodium salt of oxycellulose (OCN), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), dialdehyde cellulose (DAC), and gelatin-ba… Show more

“…Preparations consisting of hyaluronic acid and cellulose and potentially with an active pharmaceutical ingredient for hemostatic application are unique in this category and cannot easily be compared with materials that have been used previously. Comparing the results of another cellulose hemostatic study utilizing the same in vivo model, it can be assumed that the new composite preparations proved to possess more powerful hemostatic properties [38]. The carboxymethyl cellulose textiles also showed significant effect in comparison with the oxycellulose version (HA/OX) of the new product (p < 0.01 for HA/CMC, p < 0.05 for HA/CMC/ET).…”

“…From the beginning, the Scientific Committee for the Protection of Animals at the university, along with the Ministry of Agriculture, approved the in vivo concept (approval number 19-2016) according to the submitted experimental protocols. A partial nephrectomy model in rats was then performed [38]. Forty male Wistar laboratory rats (AnLab, Prague, Czech Republic) with an average weight of 244 ± 27 g were randomly assigned to 4 test groups of 10 rats.…”

“…We found no evidence that oxidised cellulose powder causes more crusting or synechiae in the nose up to three months after surgery. Oxidised cellulose is known to induce minimal inflammatory reaction, 28 and is usually absorbed from the surgical site within a few days of application. In this study, oxidised cellulose powder was compared with a polyvinyl alcohol pack, which is also known to induce little inflammatory reaction.…”
