Localized Changes in Heat Wave Properties Across the United States

Abstract: Heat waves are an important type of extreme climate event and directly result in more than 130 deaths per year across the United States. Heat waves have been described by several attributes and combinations which constitute various event typologies. Attributes of heat waves from 10 cities are analyzed over the period 1950–2016 to understand how these attributes determine variability in local heat waves and how climate change affects heat waves across the United States. This study uses eight definitions to diff… Show more

“…At present, research on the association between ambient temperature and human health has mainly focused on the effects of extreme heat weather, and public health plans have implemented policies and interventions designed almost exclusively for heat wave [5,6]. However, a cold spell risk is generally ignored compared with previous studies focusing on heat waves [7,8].…”

“…To check the sensitivity of analysis results to model parameters and evaluate the stability of the model, sensitivity analysis was conducted by changing the degree of freedom (df) for time (6-8 per year), humidity (3)(4)(5), and the maximum lag days for mean temperature (14 and 21 days). We deemed the model with the lowest AIC as the final model.…”

“…Low streamflows are a major concern for those tasked with planning for and managing the surface waters in the CRB, particularly as the basin faces a future of changing precipitation patterns, increasing temperatures, and ever‐growing demands (Christensen et al ). As conditions shift to more persistent high temperatures, there are additional increases in water demands (across consumptive, energy, and irrigation sectors) which further exacerbates this challenge (Shafiei Shiva et al ).…”

“…Summers in Seoul are characterised by heavy rain (precipitation: 892.1 mm), whereas winters are relatively dry (precipitation: 67.3 mm). Since heatwaves vary in duration, intensity, or temperature depending on where they occur, there are naturally various definitions of heatwaves [72,73]. Therefore, studies that set the threshold through health indicators have recently been performed.…”
