Locally optimal soft handoff algorithms

Abstract: The design of soft handoff algorithms for cellular radio systems is considered. The design problem is posed as a tradeoff between three metrics: the rate of handoffs, the mean size of the active set, and the link quality. It is argued that the algorithm that optimizes the tradeoff between these metrics is impractical. Hence, a locally optimal (LO) handoff algorithm is derived as a practical approximation to the optimal handoff algorithm. The LO algorithm is shown to yield a significantly better tradeoff than t… Show more

“…Normally, optimal soft handoff algorithms need a complicated trajectory model of the MS which may not be available and/or accurate in practice. In this context, a locally optimal handoff algorithm may be more practical, where the motion of the MS can be approximated by a straight line as a small time-scale is adopted [60].…”

“…In [19], effect of the active BS set size and some other parameters in selecting BSs for the active set on the system performance is studied. In [17] a locally optimal handoff algorithm is derived to approximate the optimal tradeoff between the rate of handoffs, active set size and link quality. In site selection diversity transmission (SSDT) [21] a connection is always served by the BS with the minimum path loss in the active set in order to reduce interference from transmissions of multiple BSs and improve the system capacity.…”
