The aim of this paper is to provide an updated survey of the ‘‘state of the\ud art’’ in environmental policies, with a particular focus on those policies fostering the\ud generation, diffusion and exploitation of technologies improving environmental\ud performances, i.e. eco-innovations. In particular, we provide a critical appraisal of\ud the existing policy schemes, by emphasizing how the demarcation between environmental\ud and technology policies gets more and more blurred. The case for a\ud systemic approach to the implementation of policy measures is finally discussed.\ud Econometric evidence about the importance of environmental policies is also provided\ud in the ‘‘Appendix’’

This paper reviews the literature on environmental innovation (EI) and systematizes it by means of an original methodology identifying the main directions in which the literature on EI has developed over time. In order to do so, two algorithms are adopted and used to analyse a citation network of journal articles and books. The main path analysis reveals that this literature revolves around the following topics: i) determinants of EI; ii) economic effects of EI; iii) environmental effects of EI and iv) policy inducement of EI. Each of these topics is discussed and implications from the main findings as well as possible future research extensions are outlined

Streszczenie. W artykule przedstawiono rozważania dotyczące istoty innowacji ekologicznych oraz wpływu wdrażania tych innowacji na konkurencyjność przedsiębiorstw. Przewagę konkurencyjną ujęto z perspektywy czterech odrębnych, zarówno konceptualnie, jak i empirycznie, wymiarów, tj.: przewaga związana z rynkiem, wizerunkiem przedsiębiorstwa, ryzykiem i efektywnością. W dalszej kolejności odniesiono ww. wymiary do czterech kluczowych rodzajów innowacji ekologicznych, tj.: innowacje produktowe i procesowe oraz innowacje radykalne i usprawniające. Zaproponowane wielowymiarowe ujęcie relacji: "innowacje ekologiczne -konkurencyjność przedsiębiorstw" może stanowić punkt wyjścia dla przeprowadzenia badań empirycznych dotyczących źródeł przewagi konkurencyjnej przedsiębiorstw wdrażających rozwiązania ekologiczne.Słowa kluczowe: ekoinnowacje, przewaga konkurencyjna. ENVIRONMENTAL INNOVATIONS AS A SOURCE OF COMPANY'S COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGEAbstract. The paper presents the notion of ecological innovation as well as the impact of implementation of eco-innovation on company's competitiveness. It encompasses four both conceptually and empirically distinct dimensions of competitive advantage, i.e.: market-related, image-related, risk-related and efficiency-related. All dimensions were related to four key types of ecoinnovations, i.e. product and process as well as radical and incremental innovations. The proposed multi-dimensional approach may serve as a basis for future research. It may be particularly suitable for examining the sources of competitive advantage of companies implementing eco-innovations.
