Locus Ceruleus and Immunity. I. Suppression of Plaque-Forming Cell Response and Antibody Production in Rats with Lesioned Locus Ceruleus

Abstract: Earlier research had demonstrated that lesions placed in different brain structures may alter the immune responsiveness. Norepinephrine is one of neurotransmitters which plays a role in immune reactions, and the locus ceruleus represents the largest group of norepinephrine-containing neurons in the brain. The present study concerns, therefore, the relationship between the locus ceruleus and humoral immune reactions. For this purpose, rats with electrolytically induced lesions in locus ceruleus were used in the… Show more

“…Accordingly, administration of the bacterial endotoxin LPS led to an activation of the noradrenergic neurons of the nucleus coeruleus and the maximal increased turnover of biogenic amines including norepinephrine was observed at the peak of the immune response [156][157][158]. In addition, stereotaxic lesions of the nucleus coeruleus compromised immune functions including antibody production, immune cell distribution and hypersensitivity skin reaction [159][160][161][162]. A comparable effect was observed after activation of the cellular immune system by induction of the delayed type of hypersensitivity reaction [163].…”

“…In addition the occurrence and intensity of lesions in the central nervous system is markedly diminished, and the production of antibody against rat brain myelin basic protein is reduced. These changes may mainly be related to changes in the periphery, possibly mediated by hypothalamically released steroids, since there is also a reduction of the size of the thymus and a depletion of CD4 + lymphocytes in peripheral blood [378]. EAE may accordingly only reflect the immunological aspects of MS, whereas a primary impairment of astrocytic β-adrenoceptor function is lacking in this model.…”
