Long non‐coding RNAs associate with jasmonate‐mediated plant defence against herbivores

Abstract: Long non‐coding RNA (lncRNA) are important regulators of many biological processes in plants, including defence against pathogens; whether lncRNAs mediate defence against herbivore attack is yet to be explored. With wild tobacco, Nicotiana attenuata, and its well‐characterized interactions with herbivores, we identified a total of 1,290 significantly up‐ or down‐regulated lncRNAs in response to a precise herbivore elicitation treatment. Of these, long intergenic non‐coding RNAs (lincRNAs) were the most abundan… Show more

“…In addition, many secondary metabolites induced by jasmonates, which are products of complex branching metabolic pathways, play active roles in the insect resistance of plants. Over the past decade, secondary metabolites have been identified that induce resistance to the attacks of herbivorous insects, mainly including tannins, total phenols, total flavonoids, and lignin [172,173].…”

“…In addition to TFs, microRNAs have recently emerged as regulators of specialized metabolism in plants (for review see Gupta et al, 2017). Further, long non‐coding RNAs have also been implicated in regulation of anti‐herbivore responses in tobacco, which included the biosynthesis of JA (Li et al, 2021a).…”

“…221 Finally, lncRNAs in plants are also involved in JA-mediated herbivore resistance. 222 Through phytohormones, plants undergo crosstalk between biotic stress and abiotic stress signaling. Resistance to herbivores can also improve plant salt tolerance by inducing the accumulation of JA.…”
