Long noncoding RNAs are novel potential prognostic biomarkers for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma: an overview

Abstract: Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) still has a poor prognosis. The prognostic biomarkers of ESCC are not yet well established. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have recently been intensively investigated in various cancers including ESCC, and are found to be closely correlated to ESCC. Dysregulated expression of lncRNAs was widely observed in ESCC tumor tissue and was closely related to the tumorigenesis and progression of ESCC. More and more studies have found that lncRNAs were significantly correlated wi… Show more

“…It is essential to investigate tumor-associated lncRNAs in order to recognize their complex intermolecular interactions in carcinogenesis, specifically esophageal cancer. Rapid growth and high incidence of regional and distant metastasis of aggressive tumors contributes to the poor prognosis of ESCC patients, despite rapid advances in the diagnosis and treatment of the disease (23). A clear understanding of the critical mechanisms involved in the genesis and development of ESCC is required in order to improve the survival rates of ESCC patients.…”

“…To understand the role of ncRNAs in ESCC progression, numerous investigations on ncRNAs (mainly miRNAs and lncRNAs) in ESCC have been reported [7,8,[29][30][31]. Many studies on the regulation of circRNAs in ESCC are in their early stages.…”

“…Long ncRNAs can function as gene regulators by interacting with DNA (e.g., as promoters), RNA, or proteins [142]. Accumulating evidence has proposed that lncRNAs play a significant role in the biological development of ESCC, such as in the regulation of cell proliferation and apoptosis [7,143]. For instance, lncRNA small nucleolar host gene 1 (SNHG1), SNHG6, and SNHG16 have been reported to promote ESCC cell proliferation [74][75][76][77][78].…”

“…LncRNA-Low Expression in Tumor (lncRNA-LET, NCBI number AK055007), a recently identified lncRNA located at chromosome 15q24.1, has been demonstrated to be downregulated in several types of cancer, including hepatocellular carcinomas [ 12 ], esophageal squamous cell carcinoma [ 13 ] and gallbladder cancer [ 14 ]. However, the expression and function of lncRNA-LET in NSCLC are still largely unknown.…”
