Long noncoding RNAs: new insights in modulating mammalian spermatogenesis

Abstract: Spermatogenesis is a complex differentiating developmental process in which undifferentiated spermatogonial germ cells differentiate into spermatocytes, spermatids, and finally, to mature spermatozoa. This multistage developmental process of spermatogenesis involves the expression of many male germ cell-specific long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) and highly regulated and specific gene expression. LncRNAs are a recently discovered large class of noncoding cellular transcripts that are still relatively unexplored. On… Show more

“…Moreover, a majority of these transcripts do not get translated into proteins. These transcripts which are not translated into proteins are known as the noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) [ 1 , 2 ]. Earlier, ncRNAs were considered as ‘junk’, but we realized the importance of this junk chunk only recently [ 3 ].…”

“…Many potential lncRNAs have been identified in male germ cell development, some of them showing differential expression between fertile and infertile sperm. However, only a few have been functionally annotated and characterized [ 1 ] (Fig. 4 ).…”

“…Recent research has focused increasingly on lncRNAs, which control many genetic pathways. 24,28,29 Studies from the last decade have increasingly highlighted the important roles of lncRNAs in GBM. 30,32 Dysregulated lncRNAs can modulate the malignant processes associated with GBM initiation and progression.…”

“…Spermatozoa comprise a wide repertoire of RNAs that are implicated in several biological processes associated with spermatogenesis, fertilization and embryo development [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ]. In eukaryotes, the vast majority of gene transcripts are non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) [ 6 ].…”

“…While once thought to be “junk” in the sequences of genomes, accumulating evidence has shown that ncRNAs are implicated in numerous important biological processes, such as transcription, splicing, translation, epigenetic modifications, cell development and differentiation [ 3 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 ]. Recently, several reports have focused on the biological functions of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) [ 4 , 6 , 8 ]. Evidence has shown that the lncRNAs represent the largest part of the transcriptome in mammals, but only a small proportion has been functionally characterized [ 7 ].…”
