“…Parental or transgenerational RNAi effects have been observed in both coleopteran (Bucher et al, 2002;Khajuria et al, 2015;Shukla and Palli, 2014) and hemipteran insects (Coleman et al, 2015;Liu and Kaufman, 2004;Mao et al, 2013;Paim et al, 2013). For example, Liu and Kaufman (2004) used pRNAi via injection of dsRNA into the adult female to investigate the developmental role of the hunchback gene in the milkweed bug, Oncopeltus fasciatus (Hemiptera: Lygaeidae).…”

“…In the brown planthopper, N. lugens , distal‐less dsRNA injections in fifth instar nymphs caused alteration of claws in less than 5% of the progeny (Xu et al, 2013). In the kissing bug, Rhodnius prolixus , on the other hand, giant dsRNA injections in adult virgin females affected 97.4% of the embryos (Lavore et al., ), and nitrophorins 1–4 and rhodniin dsRNA injections in fifth instar nymphs induced the respective phenotypes in more than 70% of the progeny (Paim et al., ). Thus, parental RNAi has been used to elucidate the functions of genes that are essential for embryogenesis.…”

“…Rhodnius has a genome size of 733 Mbp and a short life cycle (around 4 months) among the Triatominae (Gomes et al ., ; Mesquita et al ., ; Panzera et al ., ), Figure ). Gene function can be addressed by RNA interference (RNAi): the injection of dsRNA molecules in adults produces a systemic and long‐lasting downregulation of the cognate gene (Paim et al ., ). Likewise, bacterial strains engineered to express dsRNA moieties against Rhodnius genes can also induce efficient knockdown when fed to adult insects (Durvasula et al ., ; Matthews et al ., ).…”
