Long Term Performance Study of a Direct Methanol Fuel Cell Fed with Alcohol Blends

Abstract: Abstract:The use of alcohol blends in direct alcohol fuel cells may be a more environmentally friendly and less toxic alternative to the use of methanol alone in direct methanol fuel cells. This paper assesses the behaviour of a direct methanol fuel cell fed with aqueous methanol, aqueous ethanol and aqueous methanol/ethanol blends in a long term experimental study followed by modelling of polarization curves. Fuel cell performance is seen to decrease as the ethanol content rises, and subsequent operation with… Show more

“…As a matter of fact, ethanol, and very likely other volatile congeners, have been shown to decrease the energy yield, as already documented in the literature [28]. Initially, this result may appear discouraging when compared to the outcomes of a pure methanol supply (see Tables 2 and 3).…”

“…Alcohols and their blends and aqueous solutions are interesting candidates, e.g., for the use as fuels in direct alcohol fuel cells [125][126][127]. There are lots of vibrational spectroscopic studies investigating the physical chemistry of alcohols and their mixtures with water, in particular the hydrogen bonding phenomena [128,129].…”

“…In order to mitigate such phenomena, novel materials and components need to be developed and intensively tested in relevant operating conditions [14][15][16] and therefore the development of representative accelerated stress tests (ASTs) is crucial to reduce the required testing time. Typically, AST protocols are developed to enhance under specific operating conditions one single degradation mechanism at a time [17,18] (e.g., catalyst dissolution and/or agglomeration, membrane degradation, etc.…”
