Long term prognosis after occlusion of middle cerebral artery.

Abstract: Seventy patients who had developed occlusion of the middle cerebral artery confirmed by angiography between 1970 and 1980 were followed up after an average of six years. Fourteen patients had died in the acute stage of the initial stroke. In the remaining 56 patients actuarial analysis showed that the observed incidence of survival for five years was 818% compared with an incidence of 94-1% in a matched normal population. Six patients sustained new strokes, four of which were ipsilateral to the middle cerebral… Show more

“…The MCA is the most commonly affected vessel in stroke (Mohr et al, ), and its occlusion is associated with late‐onset seizures and epilepsy (De Carolis et al, ; Sacquegna et al, ). The MCA occlusion model of stroke has been used to investigate whether the initial ischemic injury is followed by an epileptogenesis phase and eventually by recurrent spontaneous seizures in rats (Karhunen et al, , ; Pitkanen et al, ; Kelly et al, ; Miller et al, ).…”

An ulcer was suggested only in 5 of the 142 (4%) severely stenosed middle cerebral artery where this finding could be evaluated (76%).…”

“…Different factors appear to predict PSE. The two most common factors are large infarct size (Hauser et al ., 1984; Fish et al ., 1988; Faught et al ., 1989; Kotila and Waltimo, 1992; Giroud et al ., 1994; Heuts‐van Raak et al ., 1996) and cortical involvement (Silverstein and Hollin, 1965; Gilmore and Brenner, 1981; Hauser et al ., 1984; Sacquegna et al ., 1984; Berger et al ., 1988; Fish et al ., 1988; Shinton et al ., 1988; Daniele et al ., 1989; Faught et al ., 1989; Sung and Chu, 1989; Kilpatrick et al ., 1990; Weisberg et al ., 1991; Davalos et al ., 1992; Kotila and Waltimo, 1992; Lancman et al ., 1993; Giroud et al ., 1994).…”
