Long-Term Results after External Radiotherapy in Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Abstract: External RT of AMD with 14.4 Gy as well as with the escalated dose of 25.2 Gy showed a poor beneficial outcome after 6 and 12 months, respectively. After a follow-up of 4 years, visual outcome in irradiated patients was similar to the natural course of the disease. A conspicuous efficacy of RT in prevention of blindness could not be demonstrated.

“…RT is known to be very effective in the treatment in various entities of benign diseases [5,20,26,27,35,37,39], but worldwide it has no acceptance in the management of degenerative and inflammatory disorders [37]. By contrast, in the Central European countries and especially in Germany anti-inflammatory RT has a long tradition and is used routinely in clinical practice.…”

“…In our study, these patients were treated with a mean dose of 44 Gy. In additional to local disease control, treatment of orbital lymphoma should consider the functional preservation of the eye [5,12,19,24]. A posttherapeutic enucleation was not necessary in our series, and retina or optic nerve complications were not observed either.…”
