Long-term survival and prognostic implications of patients with invasive breast cancer in southern Taiwan

Abstract: Our objective in this study was to determine the survival rate of patients with invasive breast cancer and identify the prognostic factors related to all-cause mortality during a 10-year follow-up. Analysis was performed on the medical records of 2002 patients newly diagnosed with breast cancer at a medical center in southern Taiwan between 2006 and 2017. The Kaplan–Meier method and Cox regression analysis were used to estimate survival and the independence of prognostic factors associated with all… Show more

“…9 A meta-analysis including 24 survival studies from Iran also reported the mean age of the patients at 48.27 (CI = 43.68-52.86) years, 10 which indicates an increasing trend in breast cancer diagnosis age. In most Iranian studies, like other Asian countries, breast cancer's median age is under 50 years, [11][12][13][14][15][16] which is different from the median age of the Western countries that are mostly above 50. 4,17 Our findings indicated that the five-year survival rate was 76% ( ± 0.023) for patients < 40 years and 84% ( ± 0.009) for patients ≥ 40 years.…”

“…In effect, tumor differentiation is an independent prognostic factor in many malignant neoplasms, such as lung cancer, breast cancer, and esophageal cancer. [28][29][30] Even in some tumors, tumor differentiation…”

“…Patient survival was determined by analyzing factors such as primary tumor size, characteristics of surrounding structures, number and location of regional lymph nodes, presence/absence of an extracapsular extension, and presence/absence of distant metastasis [19]. The detailed information is shown in a previous publication [20]. Approximately 99% of the patients (4272 patients) were excluded due to being female breast cancer or having carcinoma in situ.…”
