Longitudinal Patient-Reported Performance Status Assessment in the Cancer Clinic Is Feasible and Prognostic

Abstract: The enhanced resolution provided by patient-reported performance status, as measured by the Patient Care Monitor, allows for the detection of changes in trajectory over time, potentially serving as an early-warning system to trigger clinical interventions.

“…Despite the lack of a comparing standard of reference, there were significant correlations between the three selected external variables, particularly between ECOG and KPS, which is consistent to the correlation previously described by Suh SY, et al (r = − 0.81, p < 0.001), 42 indicating that these scales address factors that matter to a CGA in the oncology setting.…”

“…Interestingly, the new staging system has 5 size-based categories with cut-off points at 2, 3, 5 and 7 cm, which demonstrate significant differences in median survival in NSCLC patients [31]. Regarding the KPS score, it has been considered an independent risk factor for both quality of life and survival time in this population [32,33]. Based on our multifactorial variance model, the associations with tumour volume and KPS score suggest that the PA and the ECM/BCM ratio are not only indicators of nutritional status but are also hypermetabolic tumour markers.…”

“…Cella et al 12 summarized the possible benefits of using patient reported outcomes in clinical care as: assisting clinical providers in managing their patients care 16 : enhancing the efficiency of clinical practice 17,18; improving patient-provider communication 17,19; identifying patient needs in a timely manner 17,20 ; and facilitating patient-centered care 17 . All of these various points were mentioned independently by our study participants.…”
