Looking into global value chains: influence of foreign services on export performance

Abstract: Drawing on the literature that has shown the prevalence of short-lived trade relationships, the aim of this paper is to provide further understanding about this issue by exploring the impact of engaging in Global Value Chains (GVCs) on the chance of export survival at product-country level. We also investigate whether the type of GVC participation (backward or forward) matters for export survival. Furthermore, we consider the level of development of countries with which GVC linkages are established. Our findin… Show more

“…That is, in the context of GVCs, the dependency of intermediate IT services from other countries can be positively connected with the dependency of other inputs that come from the same countries. Hence, we would expect a positive sign for the coefficients of both variables (Díaz‐Mora et al, 2018).…”

“…Services, and trade in services, are key enablers of global production networks. Services provide the "glue" that connects the fragmented and dispersed production stages that constitute GVCs (Díaz-Mora et al, 2018). The feasibility of international production networks, as well as their recent growth, have been made possible by, among other things, the significant technological advances that have increased the ease of delivering services across borders.…”
