“…The counties north of Yangtze River side, including Macheng, Xiaogan and Hongan of Hubei province were B. orientalis free (Liu et al, 2007). However, in a later study, 1 (1/88) and 2 (2/88) positive cases were reported north of Yangtze River by semi-nest PCR and a loop-mediated isothermal amplification assay (LAMP), respectively (He et al, 2009b). The finding means B. orientalis had been spread to non-epidemic areas ( Figure 2 ), possibly by convenient transportations of water buffalo from south to north because more and more bridges built on the river make the river no longer a natural barrier.…”

“…It has recently been shown to have spread to the north of the Yangtse River, posing a serious threat to the water buffalo industry (He et al, 2009).…”

“…These buffalo were splenectomised 2 weeks before experimental B. orientalis infection. Each buffalo was subcutaneously injected with 4 ml of blood containing B. orientalis (Wuhan strain, 1% parasitaemia) (He et al, 2009b). Blood samples were collected every day to monitor parasitaemia until it reached 3%.…”

“…It is necessary to develop a specific and sensitive diagnostic method. Many useful diagnostic methods for B. orientalis have been developed recently, which include semi-nested PCR , reverse line blot hybridization assay (RLB) (He et al, 2012), loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) (He et al, 2009b) and real-time PCR (He et al, 2011). However, most of these methods are time consuming, and require specialized laboratory equipments and trained personnel.…”
